Story Highlight
  • Avalanche Studio’s founder has recently discussed Mad Max.
  • He believes the game did poorly because Warner Bros forced the team to release it alongside Metal Gear Solid 5.
  • This also meant that DLC was cancelled, and the game was forced to shift direction during development.

Recently, the Mad Max director George Miller stated that 2015’s gaming adaptation wasn’t as good as he had hoped for, and he would love to work with someone like Hideo Kojima.

Soon after that, Avalanche Studio’s founder, Christofer Sundberg, took to Twitter and stated that this statement was nonsense. He also blamed Warner Bros for the game’s failure.

Why it matters: The Mad Max adaptation is considered underrated by some since they believe it never got the attention it deserved.

Mad Max Was Well Received By Fans At Launch

Sundberg described how Miller and his team did everything they could to make the game a completely linear experience after choosing open-world developers. The developer was clearly not fond of director George Miller’s comment.

While talking about Mad Max, Sundberg stated that Warner Bros quickly realised that they were forcing the team to do a project that was not a great fit for them. He then stated that they were forced to release it alongside Kojima’s excellent Metal Gear Solid 5.

Because the game couldn’t compete with this title and ended up with poor sales, all the planned DLCs were also cancelled.

We were forced to release Mad Max on the same day as MGS. They blamed us for the bad sales and cancelled a bunch of awesome DLC.

The director noted that Hideo Kojima would be great for the series. However, he would aim for a very different type of experience, and given the constraints, Avalanche Studios deserves more credit for what it achieved.

We May See Mad Max Game Again In The Future

This is not the first time publisher meddling has ruined or drastically changed projects. Various studios have noted how poor release timings harmed their games, with the example of Titanfall 2 immediately coming to mind.

Anyhow, Mad Max is still a great game to play today for those who enjoy open-worlds and Batman Arkham-style combat. The game can be found for dirt cheap on most platforms, so fans of the franchise may want to give it a shot.
