While Ubisoft has not been at its best over the past few years, the company is well known for its expertise in open-world games. After the recent release of Skull and Bones, which saw a lukewarm reception, the publisher is confident in its ability to make a comeback.

It intends to target the open-world genre once again.

Why it matters: Following the release of the original Assassin’s Creed, this studio became well-known for its open worlds, inspiring many other developers to follow.

It’s been further stated that the open world genre represents a €25 billion market today and is expected to grow even bigger over the coming years. While this market is dynamic, Ubisoft can rely on it through its biggest franchises.

The publisher is counting on franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, The Division, Ghost Recon, and Star Wars for the open-world genre. It believes that with releases like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it will dominate the genre again.

Ubisoft Has Many Award-Winning Franchises Under Its Belt

As stated earlier, the studio was among the first to adopt open-worlds in non-RPG titles.

However, today, the ‘Ubisoft open world‘ is almost always used as a negative term since the studio’s games have been criticized for bland maps, content bloating, and repetition across various IPs.

To rise above modern open worlds, the publisher must address these challenges. This journey could start with Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws, two games that promise to move away from tried-and-true trends like the Ubisoft towers.

However, it remains to be seen if these titles will be enough to make up for the current lack of trust among fans.
