Ever since the Fallout TV show came out, the franchise has seen a significant resurgence, and the last mainline entry, Fallout 4, saw numbers as high as 90K on Steam for the first time in several years.
Additionally, Bethesda released a next-gen update for Fallout 4 last week, and as expected, the RPG has seen another boost in the players. According to reports, the in-game player count has increased by over 50% since then.
Why it matters: This is a major feat since all games in this series were already recording record-high numbers before the update was launched.
As reported by TrueAchievements, data gathered from over 2.5 million random active Xbox accounts suggests Fallout 4 saw a massive 54% increase in players following the next-gen update.
It has also been reported that the title overtook Minecraft to claim the third position on the weekly charts made from this data. Meanwhile, Fallout 76 beat Rainbow Six Siege to claim the fifth spot.
The next-gen update aims to provide the best possible RPG experience from Bethesda on consoles. It targets a sharp 4K image across all modes, adjusting the quality to provide a 30FPS or 60FPS experience.
This update also includes various content packs, making it more than just a resolution bump.

Interestingly, this update’s rollout has not been the smoothest.
Bethesda initially had trouble providing the new version for PlayStation users. Elsewhere, the patch has caused various problems across different Xbox and PC, including animation bugs and mod corruption.
However, the Fallout series is so popular today that this has not stopped millions from logging on across the many games on offer.
Bethesda is now hoping to release Fallout 5 as quickly as possible.
According to Todd Howard, the team is making plans to speed up development. Other reports claim that Microsoft wants Fallout 5 out before 2030 at the latest, so there is a lot to anticipate in the coming years.
