Story Highlight
  • The Last of Us Part 2 is among PlayStation’s biggest first-party IPs.
  • Following the first entry, Part 2 did not fall too far behind, becoming the PlayStation Store’s fourth most-downloaded first-party game.
  • This led to revenue of $240 million from digital sales by mid-2023.

When thinking about PlayStation’s biggest games, the likes of God of War and Spider-Man come to mind. However, The Last of Us is equally important, with Naughty Dog’s IP boasting some of gaming’s best narratives.

The Last of Us is also just as successful in terms of commercial performance. According to data from recent leaks, The Last of Us Part 2 was Sony’s fourth most successful first-party launch on the PlayStation Store last generation.

Why it matters: Naughty Dog has not moved away from this series in the last four years. The figures on the PlayStation Store highlight exactly why the developer is so comfortable with sticking to this IP.

A new finding from last year’s Insomniac leak shows download figures from PlayStation’s online store. Over on Resetera, a user has arranged the titles in order of highest revenue generated.

When looking at first-party games only, Spider-Man and God of War finish in the first and second place. The former generated $315 million, and the latter earned $279 million.

The Last of Us Part 2 finished in third place with $242 million, making it the third most successful exclusive on PlayStation Store. When going by the number of downloads, the game drops to fourth place.

Still, the game sold fewer copies than its predecessor.

Fans Were Initially Divided About Abby’s Role In The Game

It should be noted that these figures are accurate for sales until June 2023. Since its launch in 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 has been discounted multiple times on the PlayStation Store, putting it among the best-selling titles.

Following the recent remaster on PS5, it could eventually outpace its predecessor.

If rumors are to be believed, The Last of Us Part 2 is also heading to PC this year, which will further increase the sales and revenue of this title. All in all, Naughty Dog’s latest release is undoubtedly a massive success.

While audiences were certainly divided about the game at release, this discourse hardly impacted the commercial performance. Nearly four years later, PlayStation is likely to be ecstatic about the sales.
