- Helldivers 2 is the biggest release in the shooter genre right now.
- The game has many unique features, but fans have been asking for melee weapons.
- The developer said melee is possible, but players should not expect crossover weapons like lightsabers.
Helldivers 2 was a major wildcard in 2024. After blowing up in February, the game has retained a large chunk of its players, defying expectations. In the saturated first-person shooter market, it continues to pull hundreds of thousands of players each month.
This genre is currently dominated by the likes of Fortnite and Call of Duty, which rely on endless collaborations for growth. However, Helldivers 2 is not interested in this idea, and the developers want to avoid turning their game into Fortnite.
Why it matters: Collaborations or crossovers with other anime, TV shows, or games seem like great ideas, but they don’t always work as intended.
The conversation regarding collaborations started when fans on the official Discord server asked whether new melee weapons were still in the picture. Arrowhead Game Studios has, for now, assured the fans that it might still happen.
There are countless ways to handle melee weapons, but the developer seems to be quite picky in this case. According to the community manager, such weapons would strictly abide by Helldivers 2’s own themes.
Melee weapons could be plausible. Lightsabers from Star Wars would not. We don’t want to be Fortnite.

Fortnite started out as a fairly basic game, with its fundamentals revolving around the third-person gameplay and building mechanics.
However, players will find that it has turned into a completely different game today, with characters like Goku, Cell, Spider-Man, and more running out. Moreover, these characters often bring their own gameplay mechanics, including Kamehameha waves and more.
This did bring a new wave of players to the battle royale title, but those who had liked it before didn’t enjoy the new elements. The OG Fornite event was loved by a massive audience for this reason, leading to 6 million players.
The Helldivers 2 developers want to avoid this trend as the game is already fun. Friendly fire is one of the best features of the game, and the developer thinks it’s hilarious.
The community manager has asserted yet again that the team will not stray from its core ideals. This means that major crossovers are unlikely to ever happen, even if the team decides to include smaller easter eggs or references to other IPs in the future.
Ultimately, the developer wants to ensure that the game preserves its identity since it is very easy to sacrifice this element if crossovers are frequently implemented in a long-running live-service release.
