- The Tekken franchise remains one of the most popular fighting games to date.
- It has been reported that the franchise has now sold over 57 million copies.
- Over 50% of the sales came from Europe.
The Tekken franchise has always been critical to the fighting game genre. As one of the few 3D fighters on the market, it has evolved spectacularly over the last decade, with Tekken 8 becoming a fan favorite in no time.
This game sold 2 million copies in three weeks, exceeding expectations. Following this milestone, the entire franchise has sold over 57 million units.
Why it matters: Tekken almost fell into obscurity after Bandai Namco spent a massive budget on Tag Tournament 2, which ended up being the IP’s biggest failure.
A recently released video featuring Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida and Tekken 8 producer Katsuhiro Harada was recorded before the launch of Tekken 8.
While discussing the franchise, Katsuhiro Harada stated that it has sold over 55 million copies. Following the latest launch, this figure has risen by 2 million, bringing the total up to 57 million.
These numbers have not been officially confirmed by Bandai Namco yet, but an official announcement could come alongside the eighth mainline entry’s next sales update. In the meantime, the producer shared that over half of the sales came from Europe.
Elsewhere, the US contributed to around 30% of Tekken’s lifetime sales. Going by the competitive scene, we can assume that nations like Japan and Korea also played large roles in the 57 million total.
Much of Tekken’s current popularity is a direct result of Tekken 7. This game experienced a boom after its competitive scene became famous among enthusiasts and casual players alike.
However, Tekken has been surrounded by controversy recently. Bandai Namco has added microtransactions like a Battle Pass and a costume shop, citing high budgets as a justification. Fans, on the other hand, have not been too happy.
Still, the game remains a solid fighting game. The core gameplay offers the most fresh experience in the franchise since the days of Tekken 5. Therefore, the Heat system is a nice change of pace.
