- Larian Studios is now working on something completely new.
- The studio does not plan to release Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or Baldur’s Gate 4.
- Swen Vincke states that the developers will move away from Dungeons & Dragons.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was a bit of an anomaly last year. Belonging to a niche franchise, it exceeded all expectations to claim Game of The Year, dominate platforms like the Steam Deck, and sell millions of copies.
Following this success, one would naturally expect Larian Studios to capitalize on the buzz and go all in. However, this team has never been one to follow the norm, with director Swen Vincke confirming there are no plans for Baldur’s Gate 4.
Why it matters: With this game putting Larian Studios on the map like never before, audiences have been shocked at the director’s departure.
This information comes from GDC 2024. At the same conference, director Swen Vincke expressed his thoughts on corporate greed and its impact on the industry. However, his next statement was a major revelation.
It’s not Baldur’s Gate 4. We’re going to move on.
-Swen Vincke
Even more shocking is the fact that Larian Studios intends to step away from Dungeons & Dragons altogether. For the unfamiliar, Baldur’s Gate is based on this IP, borrowing from its many elements.
The team is handing the Dungeons & Dragons IP to Wizards of the Coast. Furthermore, the director has shot down hopes of any DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3, hinting at intentions of doing something entirely new.
While the director did not say much else about his plans, we can trust Larian Studios to deliver after its latest release.
Baldur’s Gate 3 practically raised the bar for CRPGs. The team remains committed to delivering a similar level of quality for its next project, even if it is not a part of Dungeons & Dragons.
