PS VR2 was released by Sony in early 2023, and it was supposed to be a game-changer. However, over a year later, the headset has barely made a dent in the saturated VR market.

PS VR2 has not been a hit, as Sony expected it to sell 2 million units in 6 weeks. However, it had to lower expectations down to 1 million, which was further reduced to 600K soon enough.

Following this performance, Sony announced PC compatibility, possibly as a last-ditch effort. The headset has been in limbo for many months, and a new report outlines that Sony recently stopped production of PS VR2.

Why it matters: The PS VR2 was launched for $550 in a challenging economic market. This price, combined with the limited number of PS5 users, may have led to its current situation.

This report comes directly from Bloomberg, a reliable media outlet.

According to the report, Sony hasn’t completely given up on the headset, as the company has stopped production until the piled-up inventory is cleared. Sony previously cut production by 20%, but the current situation is much worse.

PlayStation started with the production of 1.5 million PSVR 2 units, and it seems like it produced well over 2 million units eventually. With PlayStation unable to sell these off, the gaming giant’s current VR endeavors are in serious trouble.

Shipments have declined every quarter, the games library has failed to deliver, and Sony seems uninterested in moving more resources to VR as it struggles with layoffs impacting key parts of its business.

However, there is still hope, according to the IDC. This particular company tracks the products delivered to retailers and has made optimistic claims, stating that recovery is still possible for PS VR2.

The VR market is not the biggest in gaming but is expected to grow tremendously by 2028.

For PS VR2, PC compatibility could provide the big breakthrough Sony wants. However, this market already has established competitors like Meta, making it no easy task for PlayStation.
