- Sea of Thieves is up for pre-order on the PS5.
- Following the anticipation, this game has climbed the pre-order charts on the PS5, taking the top spot.
- This could lead to more multiplatform releases from Xbox.
Following various rumors, Microsoft confirmed Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves for the PS5. This announcement promised to bring this multiplayer pirate sandbox to more players, and it seems to be working in Microsoft’s favor so far.
While the game is not coming this month, it has already shown promise, becoming the most pre-ordered PlayStation game in the US.
Why it matters: There were a lot of doubts about Microsoft’s decision before the announcement, with many expressing frustration about the rumors.

It should be noted that the premium edition of the game is the one in the first spot. The base game costs $40 and is in the 5th spot right after Dragon’s Dogma 2. This version seems to be unique to PlayStation, attracting more players to the game for their first venture.
Meanwhile, PlayStation’s highly anticipated exclusive, Rise of the Ronin, is much lower on the list. Similarly, Sony’s own MLB The Show franchise is falling behind Sea of Thieves in terms of pre-orders.
Sea of Thieves sails on PlayStation consoles on April 30. This makes the current position quite impressive since the game is much further away from its release than the likes of Rise of the Ronin.
Overall, Xbox’s strategy to bring exclusives over to PlayStation appears to be working so far. This is also a major win for Rare since Sea of Thieves will benefit from a larger audience next month.
The former PlayStation boss also thinks exclusivity can harm games since live service titles need as many players as possible. Perhaps this is why Microsoft also thought about bringing Halo to PlayStation at one point.
This release is also setting an exciting precedent for any future Microsoft games. It is speculated that Xbox is testing the waters with these titles, so Sea of Thieves’ success may lead to even more multiplatform releases.
Apart from Rare’s live service title, Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Grounded are set to release on PlayStation and Nintendo hardware by next month.
