Story Highlights
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series S|X consoles will feature 4 physical discs.
  • A fourth disc was needed for an additional 500MB of data.
  • Larian chose to include four discs instead of cutting 500MB to fit the game on 3 discs.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to receive a physical launch soon, and Larian Studios has run into an interesting predicament for the Xbox Series S|X version. The developer has confirmed that it will ship on 4 discs for the Microsoft consoles.

Why it matters: The PS5 physical edition will ship on two discs mainly because PlayStation uses higher-capacity Blu-Ray discs.

Larian’s publishing director, Michael Douse, revealed the information in a Tweet. He stated that the game nearly fit on three discs, but the studio ran into a hurdle during the last moments.

Baldur’s Gate 3 had 500MB of remaining data, requiring a 4th disc for the physical launch. Had the developer chosen to move forward with three discs, it would have needed to cut content.

This process will lead to a slight delay in the game. Instead of March 25, the physical versions will now start shipping from the first week of April. The game is also headed to PC in a new package, though this version will come with a Steam code.

For reference, Baldur’s Gate 3 is almost 150GB on PC, 137GB on Xbox, and 108GB on PS5. This explains why the Xbox version needs more discs, but it is quite shocking to see it requiring four discs.

Previously, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition shipped on three discs for the Xbox Series S|X consoles. Because Microsoft relies on lower-capacity discs, this phenomenon could become more common as the generation goes on.

However, it remains to be seen if any future game will beat Baldur’s Gate 3’s four-disc release. For now, most games can still fit on one or two discs.
