The Tomb Raider franchise made a name for itself after combining platforming, puzzle-solving, and action gameplay quite early on. Modern games from Crystal Dynamics carry much of this legacy, but the team is ready for a new project.
With the conclusion of the recent trilogy, this team is now working on a new Unreal Engine 5 Tomb Raider game in collaboration with Amazon Games. The series also received a remastered trilogy recently.
Following this release, Crystal Dynamic’s website appears to have been updated, showing the first glimpse at Lara Croft’s new design.
Why it matters: Lara Croft had little to no resemblance to her classic variant in the modern trilogy, but the studio appears to be returning to her roots this time around.
The official website has uploaded new member-only wallpapers.
Since these appear to be new renders, there is a strong likelihood that these designs are related to Tomb Raider’s next project. Not too long ago, the same website teased an incoming announcement.
The design appears to be very reminiscent of Lara Croft’s appearance from the remastered trilogy. It combines her classic outfit with parts of her design from the recent trilogy, bringing a best-of-both-worlds approach.
The upcoming anime adaptation from Netflix portrays a similar take on Lara Croft, hinting that this will be the future direction for Crystal Dynamics, with the studio choosing to unify the character’s appearance across various forms of media.
Another piece of art has been shared by various users on Twitter. This could help the developer appeal to more nostalgic fans while staying true to the character’s core identity.
Little is known about this next game. However, the studio’s focus on classic elements may also translate to parts of the gameplay.
As fans wait for the announcement, the recently launched Tomb Raider remasters have earned praise for a visual revamp, but a few reviews have criticized the trilogy for retaining the frustrating elements of these classic titles.
Nonetheless, Crystal Dynamics appears to be teasing the future of Tomb Raider through this artwork. We think this design has the potential to become a beloved evolution of one of gaming’s most iconic characters, though it could still use more work and refining.
