Story Highlights
  • Call of Duty is going to the Gulf War in 2024.
  • This game will ship with an open-world campaign from Raven Software.
  • The gameplay structure will offer an experience similar to Far Cry.
  • A few linear missions will still be part of the story.

Last year, reports stated that Treyarch would be returning for Call of Duty 2024. Dubbed Black Ops Gulf War, this entry will be set in the early 90s and feature various maps from the classic Black Ops games.

Insider Gaming’s latest article on the game reveals more information about the upcoming entry. Expected to arrive in October 2024, this game will introduce an open-world campaign to the Call of Duty IP.

Why it matters: Modern Warfare 3 experimented with the same idea in the form of open combat missions.

Following job listings from 2022, the campaign is being worked on by Raven Software. This studio helped Treyarch deliver the Black Ops Cold War campaign in 2020, so characters like Adler are expected to return for this new entry.

As for the open-world focus, Call of Duty 2024 will feature a bigger focus on this element than Modern Warfare 3. The report states missions are built around this feature from the ground up, making it a key part of the single-player.

The report compared the campaign’s structure to Far Cry. Therefore, players will also gain access to vehicles for navigation. A fast travel system will also be in place, hinting at an expansive world for exploration.

Like Modern Warfare 3, the game will retain a few linear missions, though the report does not confirm how often these parts will show up.

Call-Of-Duty-Black-Ops-Cold-War

Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War is expected to inspire future games to take a similar approach. According to sources, 2025’s entry might have an even bigger open-world push after this release.

While this concept was first presented in the controversial campaign of Modern Warfare 3, it was far from successful. Apart from the generally negative perception of the campaign, open combat was considered its weakest element.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Raven Software iterates and improves upon the concept.
