Story Highlights
  • CI Games has confirmed laying off 10% of the staff from the entire company.
  • Lords of the Fallen developer Hexworks have also been affected.
  • We hope this trend will stop soon and the affected developers will secure another position soon.

Last year wasn’t all great for developers. While consumers enjoyed several great releases in 2023, studios like Bungie, Insomniac Games, Bioware, and others faced layoffs among their talented teams.

Many studios were also shut down last year as the industry coped with the challenging economy. In 2024, 2700 layoffs have already been confirmed, and CI Games has added to this number, announcing that it had laid off around 10% of its staff.

Why it matters: Lords of the Fallen was CI Games’ biggest project and commercial success, making it odd that the team started this year with massive layoffs.

Lords of the Fallen

As reported by GamesIndustry, CI Games is letting go of around 10% of its staff, including developers from Lords of the Fallen. Other studios like Underdog, the team behind Sniper Ghost Warrior, have also been impacted by this decision.

According to the report, the marketing team had been most severely affected by the layoffs. CEO Marek Tyminski said:

“CI Games has made the tough but necessary decision to implement a targeted round of redundancies, affecting approximately 10% of employees across the company.”

The CEO of CI Games states this decision was made to preserve the business strength of the publisher. He also thanked all the developers for their roles at CI Games in the past, acknowledging their contributions to the studio.

The exact number of developers laid off remains to be revealed. However, with the publisher employing around 140 people, at least 14 have lost work following this announcement.

Lords of the Fallen

As sad as this news may be, we hope the laid-off workers will be able to find employment and join other studios to continue pursuing their passion for gaming.

These developers were a massive part of the success of Lords of the Fallen. Selling over 1 million units, this title has been a hit for CI Games, opening up more possibilities for the publisher’s future projects. It is also expected to generate over $100 million in revenue.

According to recent reports, a sequel to Lords of the Fallen is planned for release in 2026. However, it remains to be seen how much of an impact these layoffs will leave on the game’s development.
