Remedy Entertainment is currently in the process of creating two Max Payne remakes. Combining the first two entries, this project has begun production. However, with the recent release of Alan Wake 2, the remakes are still a year or two away.

In the meantime, Nvidia’s work on RTX Remix has practically allowed modders to remaster this neo-noir classic themselves, adding path-tracing to the game for gorgeous visuals.

Why it matters: The original Max Payne is over two decades old, yet the game’s carefully planned aesthetic stands the test of time with a simple revamp with RTX Remix.

This project has been created by Slaks Psykbunker, remastering the game’s various assets and vastly improving the lighting. The project has also been made available for download, letting fans experience the breathtaking new look for themselves.

Thanks to Nvidia’s open-source modding tools, Max Payne looks better than ever, emanating an even more powerful sense of atmosphere thanks to custom light sources that add a new flair to the game.

With Max Payne’s core gameplay still holding up, modder Slaks Psykbunker has more or less created a standalone remaster of the game before Remedy Entertainment’s official remakes.

Not too long ago, Nvidia debuted a similar RTX Remix project for Half-Life 2. Both mods show the potential of this technology, and with Nvidia confirming an ‘Open Beta’ launch on 22 January, these tools will be available to an even wider audience soon.

In addition to the commendable attempt from the modder, the remakes from Remedy Entertainment will be worth keeping an eye out for.

The developer’s latest release, Alan Wake 2, is no less than a visual feast, and with Max Payne being a linear series, we expect an even better-looking game once the remakes are released as a single package.
