Story Highlights
  • CD Projekt RED has begun to plan the sequel of Cyberpunk 2077.
  • The developers have confirmed that the second game may have grander branching storylines.
  • They want to make lifepaths offer a more distinct experience in the next game.

CD Projekt RED has moved on from Cyberpunk 2077 and started working on its next two titles, The Witcher 4 and the sequel of Cyberpunk 2077. As the developers are currently prioritizing the development of Witcher 4, the latter is in the conceptual phase.

However, a recent interview hints at a few of the ambitions for this game. Following the promises of the first RPG, the narrative director states that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel might offer more branching storylines based on the starting life paths.

Why it matters: Choice and different outcomes are often the most requested features in RPGs since they help capture the element of uncertainty and make each player’s experience unique.

During the second episode of the AnsweRED Podcast, narrative director Philipp Weber shed light on protagonists like Geralt and V.

Discussing improvements that can be made in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel,  Weber pointed out the lack of consequences for picking one lifepath over the other. He stated this is something that should be improved in Project Orion.

While the game starts with players picking between a Nomad, Corpo, or a Street Kid, this choice has little meaning in the end. This could be completely different in the future, with Philipp Weber stating:

“Given more time, I think maybe we would make it a bit less muddled than we did it there.”

Interestingly, this was already a goal for CD Projekt RED with Cyberpunk 2077. Before launch, the studio wanted to promote a narrative centered around player choice and its impact on an evolving world.

As the director admitted, this was not something that the team achieved in the end. Despite the lifepath changing a few elements, they end up blending together after the first few hours.

Cyberpunk 2077 Night City

We believe this is a solid approach to take for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

While the game excels in many areas, it falls behind in role-playing mechanics when compared to a genre-defining RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3, which has thousands of endings due to the element of choice being integral to the narrative.

A similar implementation would add a new level of depth to the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but it should be noted that these are just rough plans. Whether they will come to fruition remains to be seen, but CD Projekt RED certainly sounds ambitious.
