- The Nintendo Switch has sold a few more million units since August.
- Nintendo’s latest console is edging closer to the lifetime sales of the PS2, which is currently the highest-selling console to date.
- First-party titles like Tears of the Kingdom are still selling well.
The Nintendo Switch is one of the most successful gaming consoles to date. Combining the appeal of handheld and home console gaming, this unique offering has been able to attract millions of customers during its six years on the market.
Not too long ago, Nintendo reported 129.53 million sales for the console. Just three months later, the company has sold a few more million units, reporting 132.46 million sales for the Nintendo Switch.
Why it matters: This is the only console to challenge the PS2’s record of selling over 158 million consoles. With each passing month, the console inches closer to this record.
Like the console, Nintendo’s first-party offerings are doing well. Games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have reached nearly 20 million sales, selling an additional million copies since August.
Older releases like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are also going strong. Nintendo’s recent experiment with Mario on the big screen has resulted in a massive boom for this title after the movie became a massive hit.
Nonetheless, the Nintendo Switch is going strong for a console expected to be in its final months. While Nintendo plans to support the hardware until March 2025 at least, a successor is expected to arrive at some point next year.
However, this extended support could eventually see the Nintendo Switch matching or getting very close to the lifetime sales of the PS2.
Evidently, Nintendo’s first-party lineup has not lost steam yet. The recently released Super Mario Wonder became one of Metacritic’s best-rated games this year, leading to multiple Nintendo games reaching the top of the ratings.
With such results, 2024 will be an interesting time for Nintendo. The gaming giant will face the challenging task of releasing a console that can live up to the legacy of the Nintendo Switch while supporting its existing user base of over 130 million people.
However, Nintendo has plans to smoothly transition its user base to the next console, likely pointing to extended support for the existing hardware and backward compatibility.
