The minimum PC requirements for Alan Wake 2 were shared by Remedy a few days ago.
Compared to other modern AAA titles, the upcoming game from Remedy is quite demanding on PC hardware and requires at least a GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 6600 for its lowest settings.
Older generation graphics cards like the Radeon RX 5000 series and GeForce GTX 10 series are, however, missing from the list. According to developer Lea-Newin, Alan Wake 2 will only be supported on graphics cards that provide mesh shader support.
Why it matters: While these graphics cards are quite old, a large number of PC gamers are still using older hardware like the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Radeon RX 5700 XT.
Although this announcement was officially made in a recent tweet, the tweet has since been taken down. Nonetheless, users of the older hardware should consider upgrading if they plan to try Remedy’s survival-horror release.
The GeForce GTX 10 and Radeon RX 5000 series were not designed to support Mesh Shaders. This also makes Alan Wake 2 the first game to fully utilize the DX12 Ultimate API.
DirectX 12 helps reduce CPU overhead, bringing GPU performance improvements of up to 20 percent. DX12 Ultimate, on the other hand, will further reduce CPU draw calls per scene.
Additionally, it aids in the removal of unnecessary triangles. The amplification shader is utilized for this purpose.
Remedy has always pushed the boundaries of graphics with games like Control. It featured cutting-edge technologies, staying ahead of the curve through new introductions like ray tracing.
Alan Wake 2 is expected to be no different. The game will also include a 60FPS option for console gamers, with Remedy confirming that the game runs well on PlayStation and Xbox hardware.
It should be noted that graphics cards from the GeForce GTX 1650 and 1660 family support mesh shaders. Therefore, owners of such GPUs should be able to play Alan Wake 2, though they will fall below the minimum requirements for upscaled 1080p 30FPS gameplay.
