It appears another redemption arc has begun in the gaming industry. After Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 2042 is the latest game to experience a massive resurgence through a number of post-launch updates and fixes.
Last week, the game reached its highest concurrent player count on Steam since 2021, falling just a few thousand players short of breaking its own record. Following the latest sale and free weekend, Battlefield 2042 has reached over 107K players, surpassing its previous concurrent peak on the platform.
Why it matters: Many believed that the game’s recent popularity boom was a result of the free weekend. However, it retained those players, and the statistics prove Battlefield has finally made the comeback Dice was looking for.
According to SteamDB, this weekend has been even better for Battlefield 2042 than the last.
Peaking at over 107K players, this is a massive comeback for a game many had written off until recently. With a focus on classic elements and continued improvements, Dice has redeemed a first-person shooter that faced industry-wide criticism for nearly two years.
Battlefield 2042 is now closer to its predecessors, with the studio moving away from a focus on specialists. As such, new updates have led to an influx of returning and new players looking to experience the large-scale warfare of the Battlefield IP.
At the time of writing, the title has also stayed among Steam’s best-selling games. With several more days left before the game returns to a standard price, it is expected to stay on this list for several more days.
Unfortunately, the game’s reviews on Steam remain a hit or miss. While nearly 60% of the recent reviews are positive, the first-person shooter has a long way to go before it can rival the reception of titles like Cyberpunk 2077.
Nonetheless, Battlefield 2042 has risen in popularity again after a massive disappointment in 2021. We hope Dice uses this opportunity to double down on the game and support it with more content.
In the past, the studio managed to redeem Battlefield 5 after several updates but later abandoned it as development shifted to the next game. Therefore, Battlefield fans are hoping that the studio will not repeat this scenario a second time.
