Lords of the Fallen was expected to thrive in the popular Souls-like genre after growing anticipation over the last few months. However, the game has received thousands of negative reviews on Steam due to technical issues.
Critics believe the game offers a satisfactory Souls-like experience, but the game is bogged down by a lack of innovation and technical issues. Testing by DSOGaming highlights the PC port, showing that the game drops to 40FPS at 4K Ultra settings on RTX 4090.
Why it matters: It has become the norm for games to launch with a poor version on PC. This has become frustrating for PC gamers, leading to negative reviews for such releases.
While Lords of the Fallen looks gorgeous due to its reliance on Unreal Engine 5, its performance leaves much to be desired.
The game uses Lumen and Nanite to power its beautiful world, but this means that even the most capable gaming graphics card is unable to handle the Souls-like at 4K without further tweaks.
Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090, combined with the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, fails to achieve 60FPS in the game at 4K resolution and ultra settings without relying on DLSS. At ultra settings, the graphics card could only offer around 48FPS on average, requiring quality DLSS for an average of 70FPS.
According to the testing, DLSS 3 Frame Generation improves performance further, taking the game above 100FPS. However, some may find it disappointing to see another game that requires upscaling for 60FPS on a $1600 graphics card.
On the brighter side, turning the settings down to high at 4K allows the GeForce RTX 4090 to push for 60FPS. Therefore, high settings appear to be the best option for PC gamers.
As noted by many reviews on Steam, the game’s performance is not the best, leading to a disappointing experience, and we hope future patches will bring significant improvements to this part of the Souls-like.
While DLSS 3 is a viable asset for the GeForce RTX 4090, it is worth noting that Hexworks has removed DLSS 3 Frame Generation temporarily, as it was causing crashes.
The studio is working with Nvidia to launch a new driver update, so GeForce RTX 4000 users should stay tuned for the next update.
