Call of Duty has put out new releases each year since 2005. The current year is no different, with Modern Warfare 3 planned for release on November 10.

Sledgehammer Games is bringing zombies to the Modern Warfare IP for the first time, in addition to a slew of classic maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. Despite such additions, a comparison video highlights that the game looks nearly identical to last year’s Call of Duty.

Why it matters: Modern Warfare 3 is priced at $70, being sold with the promise of a premium addition to the highly successful annual franchise. Therefore, many believe such similarities are unjustified for a $70 product.

A short video from Blaze on Twitter shows that Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 can look nearly identical in certain scenarios.

Both games feature similar animations, weapon models, and UI elements. This leads to a very familiar experience, one which may be too familiar for a premium game priced at $70.

The fact that nearly every multiplayer map in Modern Warfare 3 is carried over from a 14-year-old game does not help either. While these maps are likely to evoke nostalgia at first, they may get old much quicker due to past experience.

However, Modern Warfare 3 also makes various tweaks to the gameplay systems. It features changes like faster movement and a classic mini-map like older Call of Duty games, directly addressing many of the criticisms from the last game.

These subtle changes provide a more refined experience for Call of Duty enthusiasts, though many believe the game is just a repurposed DLC for Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

While the Twitter user later clarified that this video was a joke, the comparison raises an intriguing point. For a game with a $70 price point, we expect new experiences and significant strides with each new game.

An argument can be made that sequels are expected to be similar, but there is often a fine line, which, if crossed, leads to disappointment among players. In the past, Call of Duty games have often taken massive risks, straying away from a successful formula.

However, now more than ever, we feel the franchise is relying on the success of 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot, using the same core for the latest entries.

Nonetheless, many hardcore Call of Duty fans have found much to like about Modern Warfare 3, praising Sledgehammer Games for making system changes based on the community’s feedback.
