Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2022, worth nearly $70 billion, is set to bring massive changes to the gaming industry.
As the acquisition finalizes, Microsoft will take the reins of Activision’s extensive intellectual property, sparking speculation among fans about the future of its prized possession – the Call of Duty franchise.
Previous talks suggested Call of Duty might join Game Pass, and recent events have practically confirmed it. An intriguing clue about Call of Duty’s upcoming presence on the Xbox platform surfaced in a recent message on the Xbox store.
Why it matters: The addition of Call of Duty games to Game Pass will enable customers to try out different games from the franchise at a low cost. This will also tempt more people into buying the subscription service.
(FYI) If you try to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops II in the Store you get a very peculiar message that says:
"You receive this item for free with your gaming subscription. Continue to check out and use it forever!"

In Brazil, one user tried to purchase Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. However, a cryptic message appeared and said:
“You receive this item free with your gaming subscription. Continue to check out and use it forever”
This message caused excitement in the community, leading to further speculation about Call of Duty’s inclusion in Game Pass.
Furthermore, adding to the excitement, some fans shared that they could include Call of Duty Ghosts in their Game Pass library without any extra charges. Such instances suggest the franchise is on the verge of joining the subscription.
While Call of Duty was always expected to join the service, the latest message has provided further evidence for its inclusion.
Even with the growing anticipation, there’s been a notable lack of updates from both Microsoft and Activision in recent weeks.
The most recent public statement came from Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox. He told fans that the process of bringing titles to Game Pass requires a lot of effort and emphasized:
“It will take us time to get the games on Game Pass.”
Still, it would be best to take this information with a grain of salt since official confirmation remains to be made.
Excited fans are anticipating more updates soon. There is a low probability of Call of Duty joining Game Pass right from day one, aligning with the highly awaited release of Modern Warfare 3 on November 10. However, it might be a little far-fetched.
Nonetheless, older games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are nearly guaranteed to become a part of the service in 2023. Such games have also received fixes recently, going through a major resurgence in July.
