The previews for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have been released, and they bring a plethora of new details about the game.

In addition to gameplay videos and impressions, staff from Insomniac Games has also been interviewed by the media, shedding light on the studio’s development process and the changes made between the two Spider-Man games.

Following the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, PlayStation acquired Insomniac Games in early 2020. When asked about this merger, Marvel’s Spider-Man creative director Bryan Intihar said he was extremely happy with the acquisition.

Why it matters: Insomniac Games has become a valuable asset to PlayStation’s first-party studios, and the team has created PlayStation’s most anticipated release of 2023.

Speaking to Gamesindustry, Bryan Intihar discussed Insomniac Games’ journey between Marvel’s Spider-Man and its upcoming sequel.

In addition to the games released between these titles and the experience gained from working on them, he shared his thoughts on being acquired by PlayStation and how it impacted the studio.

When describing his work after the acquisition, he said:

“If anything, it’s just got better. I forget a lot of the time we are part of PlayStation. We’ve worked with them for so long.”

He then pointed to people like Mark Cerny, who helped bring Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to life on the PS5. Mark Cerny is the lead architect of the PS5, and his close supervision was vital to ensuring Insomniac Games could extract the console’s full potential.

Close collaboration with PlayStation’s team allowed Insomniac Games to effectively eliminate loading screens using the PS5 SSD, and it ensured the console would allow players to swing faster than previous entries.

Bryan Intihar also addressed working conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that PlayStation allows remote work for certain states, leading to productivity all over the studio.

All of this contributed to a positive impact on Insomniac Games and its titles once the studio was acquired by PlayStation.

While many have raised concerns over the growing trend of gaming acquisitions, developers usually have much to gain from such mergers.

Earlier this month, Todd Howard praised Xbox and claimed that Starfield exclusivity allowed the studio to create a better game. It appears Insomniac Games shares a similar sentiment about its partnership with PlayStation.
