Star Wars Jedi: Survivor made a major name for itself in 2023. While Star Wars has not found too much success with action games in the past, Respawn Entertainment’s franchise has been well-received.
The Star Wars Jedi series of games currently consists of two entries, following a souls-like formula alongside the abilities found in the Star Wars universe. Following the success of the latest entry, job listings hinted that EA had begun work on a new game.
However, the third game in the Star Wars Jedi franchise may face a few hurdles. The latest report from Bloomberg confirms Stig Asmussen, the director of both the games, has departed from Respawn Entertainment.
Why it matters: Stig Asmussen is a veteran developer with over a decade of action game experience, and his leadership brought the game’s fluid and satisfying gameplay systems to life.
A spokesperson from EA has confirmed the developer’s departure from Respawn Entertainment.
While a third game in the Star Wars Jedi franchise is yet to be announced, the director had already expressed his interest in a new game previously, claiming that he envisioned the franchise as a trilogy.
However, his sudden exit could put Respawn Entertainment in a difficult situation. In the past, Stig Asmussen found himself in a similar situation when the director made notable contributions to the God of War franchise.
After God of War 2, Cory Barlog left the studio, and Stig Asmussen had to direct God of War 3. His experience with such action games made him extremely suitable for his position as the director of the new Star Wars IP for Respawn Entertainment.
Nonetheless, the studio is hopeful for the future of the Star Wars Jedi series. According to the report, a spokesperson said:
“Veteran Respawn leaders will be stepping up to guide the team as they continue their work on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.”
Last month, EA announced last-generation ports for its latest release.
While the game was initially designed around the capabilities of the new consoles, the studio has embarked on its journey to scale it down and ensure a version suitable for PS4 and Xbox One is created.
However, the team will not have the supervision of Stig Asmussen on this project.
Respawn Entertainment has wished Stig Asmussen the best of luck in his future endeavors after he spent over half a decade at the studio.
His presence is likely to be missed at the studio, but the team hopes to push forward and ensure the Star Wars Jedi IP continues its current success.
