After Nintendo Switch sold over 129 million consoles, Nintendo is finally gearing up to release a new console.

The gaming giant’s next release is expected to carry forward the hybrid design introduced in 2017, bringing much-needed hardware improvements for modern games. Recently, a reliable insider claimed that the console had already been shown at Gamescom.

A week later, multiple sources corroborated this report, stating that the Nintendo Switch 2 was demoed to developers last month.

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch 2 has years of anticipation behind it due to its predecessor being the best-selling console last generation.

As reported by Eurogamer, Nintendo Switch 2 was shown behind closed doors to developers present at Gamescom 2023. The sources revealed that Nintendo showed tech demos for the upcoming console.

One of the demos for the Nintendo Switch 2 was shown with Zelda: Breath of the Wild, running at a higher resolution and frame rate than the current iteration. However, the report does not clarify if the game ran in handheld mode.

According to VGC, the popular Matrix Unreal Engine 5 tech demo was also shown using target specifications for the console. Prior rumors about the console, including DLSS support, appear to have been spot on, as sources claim the upscaling was used for the demo.

Since Nvidia is expected to bring DLSS to the Nintendo Switch 2, the upcoming console is said to feature ray tracing like the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.

However, it will likely be much more limited than the PlayStation and Xbox consoles due to its hybrid form factor.

Nonetheless, it appears the Nintendo Switch 2 is quickly approaching a full reveal. Previous leaks have claimed that Nintendo aims to release the console in H2 2024, leading to the potential for an early teaser at some point this year.

If this does not happen, a full reveal will show up at some point during the first few months of 2024.
