Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones was once among some of the most anticipated titles. However, the anticipation behind the title has slowly died off after numerous delays and difficulties during development.
Last year, Skull and Bones was expected to arrive in late 2022, but the game was delayed again. Due to development issues, the game has been delayed as many as five times, which has led to various concerns.
Following a troubled development, the game has now lost its Creative Director.
Why it matters: Skull and Bones was announced six years ago, and Ubisoft is heavily invested in it. To date, Ubisoft has spent over $120 million on it, but the studio has little to show for this budget.
Kotaku has revealed that the game has now lost its third creative director, Elisabeth Pellen.
She was sent to Ubisoft Singapore five years ago to reboot Skull and Bones, but the studio is currently dealing with a labor campaign from the country’s Creative Media and Publishing Union.
According to the report, the creative director’s time at the studio ended at short notice, and she is expected to return to Paris. Still, her work on the game ensured that Ubisoft was able to conduct a closed beta for Skull and Bones recently.
The gaming giant is targeting a launch before March 2024, but the company is not sure about this release window internally. Therefore, one last delay may not be too far-fetched.
Nonetheless, recent feedback from the closed beta has been encouraging, and Ubisoft is focused on polishing the game.
The game aims to take the solid foundation of Assassin’s Creed 4 and its naval combat, building upon it to present a multiplayer sandbox that immerses players in a memorable pirate adventure.
The studio has already spent countless years and millions on the game. Therefore, it appears to be taking care to ensure Skull and Bones does not fail to live up to the promise of a multiplayer pirate fantasy.
This is also a necessary step after the gaming giant confirmed Skull and Bones would mark its first release to be priced at $70.
