Mortal Kombat 1 is the next big release to join the fighting game genre. Scheduled to release on September 13, the game is bringing a fresh take on the story of the original Mortal Kombat through Liu Kang’s universe.
With the game just days away from launch, various details like the game’s launch roster, characters for the first Kombat Pack, and more have already been revealed. Following such reveals, Steam confirms the use of a popular DRM for the game.
According to the official Steam page, Mortal Kombat 1 will include Denuvo DRM on PC.
Why it matters: Denuvo DRM is widely criticized for negatively impacting performance and leading to problems like crashes.
Denuvo is useful for protection against piracy, but the DRM has earned a negative reputation in the industry.
Nonetheless, Mortal Kombat has used Denuvo in the past, and it appears to be continuing this tradition with the latest installment, Mortal Kombat 1, judging by the recent update to the Steam page.
It is worth noting that Denuvo was not listed on the game’s Steam page until recently, leading to ambiguity during the time of preorders. This might not sit well among users who are not fond of the DRM.
Unlike Mortal Kombat 1, Tekken 8 is confirmed to be skipping the DRM. The latter is expected to be released in January 2024, marking another strong entry in the thriving genre of fighting games.
Fortunately, like other developers, NetherRealm Studios is also known to remove the DRM sometime after launch. A similar instance was observed with Mortal Kombat 11, which removed Denuvo after two years.
Additionally, the updated Steam page suggests Mortal Kombat 1 will support cross-play on PC, a feature already in Mortal Kombat 11 on consoles and may be coming to PC with the new iteration.
In addition to a new take on the series, Mortal Kombat 1 introduces Kameo characters, changing up the traditional 1v1 formula the series has followed for several decades.
Kameos provide an opportunity to mix things up in gameplay and allow the studio to add characters that would not have made it into the roster. All of this has led to plenty of excitement for the upcoming fighting game.
