Recently, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that Homelander and Omni-Man are included in the first Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 1. While this announcement was exciting for fans, some were confused as both characters have similar powers.

Both characters possess super strength, durability, and heat vision, making them similar to Superman in many ways. NetheRealm Studios has also been used to this archetype, with characters like Superman and Supergirl from Injustice 2.

However, Ed Boon has assured fans that Omni-Man and Homelander would not be identical clones.

Why it matters: Fighting game rosters thrive when each character offers a distinct style of gameplay, allowing players to experiment and pick characters that suit their playstyles.

During a recent interview with IGN, Ed Boon from NetherRealm Studios discussed the similarities between the characters. While answering one of the questions, Ed Boon hinted that both characters would not have access to heat vision.

Elaborating on these characters, Ed Boon stated that they would offer unique abilities for each character and said:

“We’re going to divvy up those abilities, so it’s not like a clone of the same character.”

While both characters have access to similar abilities, Omni-Man is presented as a more brutal and experienced fighter in the source material. On the other hand, Homelander’s skills are unrefined.

The latter has rarely faced competition challenging enough, which adds an air of arrogance to his actions, and this may be the biggest difference between the two characters in Mortal Kombat 1.

Omni-Man is also more serious than Homelander, rarely going easy on anyone. This attribute of the character can also be used for his fatalities in the game.

Nonetheless, NetherRealm Studios has likely noticed these differences and plans to expand on such traits.

Apart from guest characters, Mortal Kombat 1 will feature plenty of familiar faces from older Mortal Kombat games for the first time in several years, including characters like Li Mei from the 3D era of the franchise.

With the game due for release on September 14, fans are less than one month away from the latest iteration of the fighting game franchise. Mortal Kombat 1 will be out for current-generation consoles and PCs along with Nintendo Switch next month.
