In the world of video games, few franchises command as much attention and excitement as Call of Duty. With the imminent release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the excitement among the players is reaching new heights.
Unfortunately, Call of Duty games have always been heavy on the wallets. Traditionally, the FPS titles come with a price tag around the $60 mark, reaching $100 for special editions. However, Modern Warfare 3 may be taking a different approach.
A Steam listing has hinted that the game could be priced at an astonishingly competitive $40.
Why it matters: If true, this would be a shift in direction for the franchise. A lower price point could also bring more players than ever to the series.
#MWIII is AUD$54.95 on the steam store/ $36 USD

The information comes from a Twitter user who saw the game priced at AUD 55 on Steam. Converting to USD, this comes out to about $40.
The user has also provided a video to highlight that the information is genuine. However, this may be an error on Steam’s part or a placeholder price. Therefore, it would be best to take the price with a major grain of salt.
In further tweets, the user suggests that the discounted price may be exclusive to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 owners. Recently, Activision has confirmed that certain content from the previous game will carry over to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Since both games are set to be linked in some ways, there may be truth to this claim. The upcoming title was initially in development as an expansion for the latest Call of Duty release.
However, Activision eventually made it a full premium game. Since it was not always intended to be a full game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may ship with less content than recent Call of Duty games.
In this instance, a discount or lower price tag would make a lot of sense. Recently, studios like Ubisoft have also confirmed a lower price tag for upcoming games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Activision may be following suit.
A total of 7 studios are confirmed to be working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but it is expected to be similar to the last game. It is possible that Activision is aware of the game’s similarities to its predecessor and chose to price it accordingly.
Nonetheless, the full reveal on August 17 should include details about pricing, features, and gameplay mechanics. This will provide a clearer picture of what this latest installment has in store for audiences.
