The Red Dead Redemption series has achieved a new milestone, with the latest game selling more than 55 million copies. This adds up to around 80 million sales for the entire series.
Due to the popularity of Red Dead Redemption, fan demand for a film adaptation has continued to rise. However, the Take-Two CEO has recently implied that the IP will not be adapted on the big screen anytime soon.
Why it matters: Recent adaptations like The Last of Us TV show highlight the potential of adapting IPs to other mediums. The Super Mario Bros movie has also been a smash hit for Nintendo.
During the latest quarterly earnings call, Strauss Zelnick said:
“The company will continue to take a very selective approach to licensing and will only do so where there is a creative, imperative, and economic opportunity.”
The CEO believes film and television projects are extremely risky as they provide a very small economic opportunity.
He then pointed to adaptations like Super Mario Bros and The Last of Us, claiming that they highlight the fact that there are many failures where money is lost.
While there is truth to the claims, most gaming adaptations have been extremely poor. Recent releases like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Sonic have marked a drastic improvement in quality, leading to improved reception.
The Last of Us TV show also left a positive impression on many, helping The Last of Us Part 2 sell more copies. Still, Strauss Zelnick implies that Take-Two is not interested in such adaptations.
Previously, Jack Black expressed interest in Red Dead Redemption, with the famous actor hoping to see it on the big screen. The IP’s cinematic nature would make it a great fit for the medium, but this is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
