Call of duty has been a hot topic since Microsoft’s Activision acquisition. To capitalize on the situation, Microsoft fixed matchmaking for older Call of Duty games, leading to a massive boom. The gaming giant appears to have done the same for Gears of War.

Various reports have claimed that the Gears of War trilogy can be played online again, with matches being available for all three games.

Why it matters: The Gears of War franchise was among the defining exclusives of the Xbox 360 generation. All three games have remained popular to this day, ensuring players visit the classic titles through backward compatibility.

Over the past few years, it has been difficult to find active servers for the 2006 title when searching for online games. However, PureXbox reports the first game’s servers are populated again.

The writer could find matches on the game without much trouble, hinting at a potential resurgence in the coming weeks. This might also lead to excitement for the franchise ahead of the next game’s reveal.

On the other hand, Gears of War 3 had already received a fix involving progression tracking and XP last month. This led to many players returning to the third game in the franchise.

The recent fixes appear to be part of Microsoft’s push to preserve classic games. Previously, Call of Duty games like Black Ops 2 boasted over 10K concurrent players on the platform in July.

Following the hype on social media, thousands of players returned to the Call of Duty franchise. A similar scenario could be seen with Gears of War, as players return to try the trilogy after recent fixes.

Looking at the future of the series, The Coalition is rumored to be working on Gears 6. A reliable leaker has claimed that the game already looks impressive, and fans should stay patient for a first look at Gears 6.
