Activision Blizzard’s success and influence in the gaming industry is undeniable. With IPs like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo, the gaming giant continues to report impressive results with each earnings report.

The recent earnings report from Activision Blizzard revealed that Diablo 4 had reached over 10 million users last month. However, it also confirms the influence of mobile gaming, with the market accounting for over 40% of the gaming giant’s revenue.

Why it matters: Mobile games like Diablo Immortal, Candy Crush Saga, and more are major contributors to the growth of Activision. This is also one of the reasons for Microsoft’s interest in the company.

Mobile gaming generated impressive revenue for the company, with Activision Blizzard confirming a growth rate of over 10%.

In comparison, consoles and PC accounted for 52% of the revenue when combined. Therefore, mobile gaming alone is nearly as lucrative as both of the popular gaming markets.

Games like Diablo Immortal already highlighted the company’s strong position in the market last year. The mobile title made over $100 million in two months and continued to make $1 million each day.

Elsewhere, IPs like Call of Duty also performed well on mobile. The financial report notes it saw positive reception to the game’s ongoing live-service model. Players have also spent over $3 billion on the game since its launch.

While the Call of Duty franchise is performing well overall, the mobile release is responsible for over half of all engagement with the franchise.

This revenue has motivated Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard. The gaming giant is very close to finishing the deal, and Phil Spencer has previously claimed mobile gaming was a huge factor in the $68.7 billion purchase.

Nonetheless, the gaming giant is expected to continue this impressive track record. Established IPs on the mobile platform are unlikely to slow down anytime soon, and this will ensure that Microsoft can also recoup costs after the merger is completed.
