Final Fantasy 16 was released nearly two weeks ago and has been a massive success for Square Enix and PlayStation so far. The game sold over 3 million copies worldwide in less than a week.

However, the second-week sales of Final Fantasy 16 have been less impressive, with sales declining by almost 90% in Japan.

Why it Matters: The Final Fantasy franchise is among the world’s oldest and most popular JRPG IPs. This led to a lot of hype behind the game, but sales have dropped quicker than expected.

Famitsu shares the weekly sales of games and consoles in Japan, and the recent report reveals that Final Fantasy 16 sold over 37,000 units last week.

However, the game had a great first week, selling 336,000 units on its debut. As such, it has only sold 10% of the total sales from the first week. Fans should note that these figures are for physical sales.

While digital sales figures have not been reported, a similar drop-off is expected. Comparatively, a several weeks old title like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 26K copies in Japan last week, not trailing too far behind Final Fantasy.

It should be noted that declining sales are common and expected for each new release. However, Final Fantasy 16 might find it hard to recover from this sales drop. As reported by Bloomberg, an analyst from Toyo Securities said:

“It would be difficult to sell more without a deep price cut.”

Despite the drop-off in sales, Final Fantasy 16 has received excellent reception, and many fans have enjoyed the new action-focused approach from CBU3. Following the positive reception, CBU3 expressed interest in working on more Final Fantasy games.

The game has also received a new patch today, finally adding the option to turn off motion blur for those not fond of the option.
