The Prince of Persia franchise is finally returning after over a decade. Summer Game Fest revealed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a 2D platformer inspired by Metroidvania games.
While fans have been starved for a new Prince of Persia game, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been subject to poor reception after the initial reveal. The gameplay trailers on Youtube have accumulated 56.2K dislikes.
In contrast, they have 22K likes when combining the trailer on different channels, such as Ubisoft, Nintendo Switch, IGN, Gamespot, and PlayStation.
Why it matters: The reception is already concerning for the franchise. Ubisoft is also struggling financially, so the developer is unlikely to revisit the series if the latest release is a massive failure.
The dislikes indicate that fans were not expecting a 2D Metroidvania game for Price of Persia. Many have also been disappointed with the overall style of the trailer, with fans claiming that choices like rap music stray away from the roots of the series.
The trailer highlights parts of the game like combat, bosses, and traversal. However, fans have not been impressed, with many claiming they were waiting for a more grand return for the series.
Ubisoft is also working on a remake for Price of Persia: Sands of Time. However, the remake has faced a troubled development cycle, later being delayed after a shift to a different developer.
Price of Persia: The Lost Crown is releasing on January 18, 2024. While the prospect of a new Prince of Persia game sounds exciting, general audiences have not been too pleased with the latest offering after 13 years.
