NetherRealm Studios has officially shown the next fighting game from the developer. Mortal Kombat 1 will take the popular franchise into the current-gen console era, potentially becoming the best iteration of the franchise.
The developer has released a new trailer, also confirming a release date of September 19, 2023.
Why it matters: Mortal Kombat has been a commercial and critical success for many decades, and fans have been looking forward to learning more from the franchise.
Looking at the trailer, Mortal Kombat 1 appears to pick up after the events of Mortal Kombat 11. With Liu Kang leading the new era, the trailer shows familiar faces like Scorpion, Sub Zero, and more.
The popular villain, Shang Tsung, is also shown, and the trailer confirms that fans can pre-order to gain access to the character. This is a common tradition with the franchise, with characters like Shao Kahn and Goro being pre-order bonus characters in past entries.
Furthermore, Mortal Kombat 1 will be the first game in the series to come with a higher $70 price tag. NetherRealm Studios has decided to skip last-gen consoles, but the FAQ states that a Nintendo Switch version is planned.
Like previous Mortal Kombat reveals, Mortal Kombat 1 does not show much gameplay. However, it gives fans a glimpse of the fatalities and brutal spectacle they can expect.
The game will also include popular fighting game features like rollback netcode, and cross-play is planned to arrive at some point after launch.
