Sony’s time in the handheld console market was relatively short-lived as the gaming giant did exceptionally well at first, but due to certain poor choices made moving ahead in the portable market, they missed out on a great opportunity.
However, Sony appears to be coming back in the portable console market as a well-known industry insider recently disclosed that Sony is working on a new cloud-based handheld device codenamed Q-Lite.
The console was previously said to be coming before 2024, but Tom Henderson recently stated on the Iron Lords Podcast that, as of right now, the console would be released towards the end of this year in November, alongside other Sony hardware, including the detachable disc drive PS5 model.
He went on to say that the device should be viewed more as an accessory than a handheld console and that a price of $200 seems realistic for it because it will essentially just be a screen with a Dualshock attached to it.
Additionally, the early Q-Lite prototypes, according to Tom Henderson, show that the handheld console would look a lot like the PS5 controller, have an 8-inch LCD screen in the middle, support adaptive triggers, and have standard features found on handheld consoles, such as volume buttons and speakers.
Several people previously speculated that this new handheld device would be the PS Vita 2, but the leaker seems to have stopped such rumors right away by stating that the Q-Lite would only be a cloud-based device that would be dependent on the PlayStation 5.
Despite the limited appeal of cloud gaming, Sony’s return to the handheld console market is exciting and could lead to new possibilities for the gaming giant. On that note, what do you think about the handheld potentially releasing in November for $200? Let us know in the comments section.
