Following its resurgence in supply, the PlayStation 5 has been thriving in the gaming industry. Sony has recently enjoyed over five consecutive weeks as the best-selling console manufacturer in Japan, beating its rival’s highly popular Nintendo Switch.
A similar trend has been observed in the UK, where Sony seems more dominant than before. A new report reveals statistics about the gaming market in the UK for Q1 2023, with the PlayStation 5 coming out on top.
PlayStation 5 also accounted for over 50% of consoles sold in the UK for the first three months of 2023.
For the first quarter of the year in the UK, game console sales are up over 24%. This is entirely down to PS5 (which was in short supply last year). Sony's new console accounted for over 50% of all game consoles sold during Q1 this year in the UK (GfK data)

Traditionally, the UK has been a strong market for PlayStation consoles. While Xbox has previously shown plenty of competition in the US, it has not been too popular in the UK market.
The biggest factor behind the PlayStation 5’s current position likely has to do with the resolved stock shortages. Like many other parts of the world, gamers in the UK have been mostly unable to find PlayStation consoles at reasonable prices in recent years.
This is no longer the case and has led to an influx of new PlayStation owners. The report further reveals that Xbox Series S|X consoles saw a decline in sales by 18% while the Nintendo Switch saw a similar decrease of 25%.
Compared to its rivals in Q1 2023, the PlayStation 5 stands in a league of its own. The latest console from Sony has seen an incredible 180% boost in sales this quarter, thanks to the high demand in the UK.
With a highly anticipated line-up of first-party games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Multiplayer, the PlayStation 5 is expected to see continued success throughout the year.
Rumors also claim that a hardware revision for the console is expected this year, offering consumers the option to buy a digital console with an optional disc drive for an upgrade later down the line.
This could provide a cheaper entry point for consumers who prefer the physical PlayStation 5 model but cannot afford it outright, and it might lead to another surge in sales, especially during the end of the year.
